The European Conservatives and Reformists group condemn the arrest of Khadija Ismayilova
December 12, the group in the European Parliament, the European Conservatives and Reformists condemned the arrest of RFE/RL journalist.
The group called for Ismayilova's immediate release and end to harassment of journalists and human rights activists.
"This case - one of a number of suspicious imprisonments - is unfortunately yet another clear sign that Azerbaijan is steering away from the democratic values and justice".
MEP, Roberts Zile said, "The manner of dealing with journalists and other civic activists who work for democracy are well known to us from the Soviet times. It can't be left without a strong reaction from the European Union and without tangible results, as Azerbaijan has committed to respecting human rights including freedom of media".

France Foreign Ministry concerned about Khadija Ismayilova's arrest
The statement issued today, said, "France calls on the Azerbaijani authorities to uphold the commitments made by Azerbaijan as a member of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and the Council of Europe, notably by ensuring respect for the freedom of the press, the independence of the judiciary, the rights of defense and the presumption of innocence.
"France expresses its concern following the arrest on December 5 in Baku of investigative journalist Khadija Ismayilova for "incitement to suicide".
The statement also mentions President Hollande's meeting with Khadija Ismayilova during his visit to Azerbaijan in May.
"We will continue to closely monitor Ms. Ismayilova's situation".
