Next hearing is scheduled for August 7
Lawyer Yalchin Imanov says the prosecutor protested against naming the president during the trial. “Khadija told the judge, 'you are not authorised to replace my detention with house arrest, because it’s the head of state who has ordered my detention'”.
The next hearing was set to take place on August 7.
Khadija's speech
In her defense speech Khadija Ismayilova stated once again President Aliyev's personal hostility against the journalist. "He [President Aliyev] imprisoned me to hinder my journalistic activity. But even though I have been behind bars, my colleagues continue the investigative work".
Ismayilova also joked of the importance and attention she has received so far in her pre-trial detention. "Every time I have to meet my lawyers, I feel like Ilham Aliyev or Kemaleddin Heydarov [Minister of Emergency Situations]. They empty the hallways and noone is allowed to go outside."
"The prison management is more interested in the things I write, rather than my obedience to the prison rules."
Ismayilova also said that the real reason behind her arrest was to prevent her from continuing her investigative work exposing Ilham Aliyev and his family's illegal business.
During the hearing today, several motions were filed:
- dismisal of the case;
- replacement of current administrative detention with house arrest;
- removal of some of the witnesses from the list
However, none of these motions were approved.
In addition, Khadija Ismayilova requested that her lawyer Yalchin Imanov is returned as her legal representative. This motion was rejected as well as the the motion to dismiss the charge of "incitement to suicide".
